'Anglo-Saxon Attitudes' Coming to DVD in USA Available to U.S. audiences for the first time; A British classic adapted for the screen by master storyteller Andrew Davies; ANGLO-SAXON ATTITUDES Acclaimed novelist Angus Wilson has drawn comparisons to Dickens and Swift for his colorful characters and grim, pitiless humor. This production perfectly captures Wilson’s adroit satirical sensibility. Richard Johnson gives an award-winning performance as Gerald Middleton, a disillusioned 60-year-old historian. As a student in 1912, he witnessed the unearthing of a controversial phallic idol in an archaeological dig. That find—and his subsequent affair with his best friend’s fiancée—sowed the seeds of tragedy that haunt Middleton and his wildly dysfunctional family. To gain peace with his past, Middleton determines to discover the truth about the mysterious idol and his own life’s folly. A darkly comic, take-no-prisoners satire, Anglo-Saxon Attitudes skewers British social and academic hypocrisy to the very core. The series won multiple awards, including the BAFTA for Best TV Drama Serial (1993) and Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award (1992). Special Features: Biography of screenwriter Andrew Davies, program previews, and cast filmographies.DVD 2-Vol. Boxed Set: 3 episodes; approx. 229 min.
